A Note on AI
A lot has been said already on the use of AI in design, art, entertainment, social media, basically our whole culture and world. Honestly, I don't have much to add to the conversation but here are 3 points I believe in:
1. AI uses real artists' work to "learn" from. Best case scenario it creates something similar in style to real work, worst case scenario it (more specifically, the person creating the prompts) blatantly steals from real artists. Yes, plagiarism has happened long before the creation of AI, but these machines make it much easier and accessible for more people to do so.
2. I believe in a Creator, capital C. We, the earth, and everything in it are God's handiwork, and we as image bearers are inherently creative. Creative work, real creative work, requires a soul. It requires thought, enjoyment, passion, process, even mistakes. Art and design is meant to communicate something and make you feel something. Whether it's a famous painter capturing a silent moment of a landscape, or your friend making you a custom hand-drawn birthday card, there is a real human being behind the creation. You don't get that when you ask a robot to "make" you a picture of your cat as a superhero.
3. I know there are environmental concerns with the data centers. I have seen the news stories about dirty water and homeowners and farmers being pressured to sell their land. I don't know all the facts about this point, and I also know that yes, it does take more water to produce avocados or oranges, or whatever, but here's a question. What's more important and worthy, growing food we feed our families with, or the next video of an anthropomorphic strawberry fighting with her banana husband?
I am sure I could think of more, I am certainly not the first to make these points, however I thought it was important to make this statement as AI seems to be making a huge, ugly stamp on our culture.
I strongly suggest you do not use any AI generated images for your project. In addition to the above 3 reasons, I also believe that a business that heavily uses AI actually creates less appeal. With our world so saturated in cookie-cutter images, what you need to stand out (as it really always has been) is to be genuine, original, and personable.
So here is my official statement on AI use for my freelance work:
-
I will not use any bot or service to create an image. I will not type in a prompt and use something created by a software/machine.
-
I do not offer the service of making an AI image "print ready". Meaning, if you generate a flyer or business card in a generative AI software, and it is not print ready, or is rejected by printers, I do not have interest in working that image into something passable. It might be possible, but I am choosing to only do work that I am proud of.
-
If you have a reference photo/idea that was AI generated, I can use it as a reference, but I cannot make an exact replica.
-
I will also not help you create prompts if you choose to use AI software for part of your business/project.
Thank you for understanding. If you have any questions, please email me.
